Denton Public Library 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

It’s never too early to start reading to your child. Reading to preschool-age children builds vocabulary, language skills, and helps prepare them with the skills they need for Kindergarten. In as little as 15 minutes a day, families can build the skills for future school and life success. 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an early literacy program that encourages families with children ages 0 to 5 to read to their children every day.

Family Place Libraries™

What is a Family Place Library?

At The Denton Public Library, we believe that the early years are foundational for a child's lifelong journey. Currently, our North Branch Library is proud to be a Family Place Library, a welcoming hub dedicated to supporting the healthy development of children from birth to age five and strengthening families through resources and connections.

Family Place builds on the knowledge that good health, early learning, parental involvement and supportive communities play a critical role in a young child’s growth and development. The overall goal of Family Place Libraries is to develop and institutionalize a family friendly environment by transforming libraries into community centers for literacy, early childhood development, parent education and engagement, family support and community information.

Families have the opportunity to spend time together, make new friends, and talk one-on-one with a different community resource professional each week.

Specially Designed Spaces

Family Place Libraries create fun and welcoming environments where children along with their caregivers can play, learn, and grow together. These specially designed spaces feature interactive Materials for very young children and parents including board and picture books, age-appropriate toys, puzzles, dramatic play items, blocks and drawing stations providing a rich space for little ones to explore.

Collaborations and Partnerships

Through partnerships with health, education and Human Service agencies that serve families and young children, librarians connect parents to needed community resources and enhance library services and programs.

This project is made possible in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, and in part by a State-funded grant from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.
